Premiership Relegation?.

Manchester City v Wigan - Bet Preview.

For those who think the relegation battle is a done deal, it’s time to take a closer look as an outside bet could prove quite profitable.

Wigan, lying in the precarious 17th position and on the brink of the relegation zone, take the short trip east to the City of Manchester Stadium. The blue side of Manchester cannot rule themselves out of the relegation fray just yet especially as a defeat to The Latics would see them leapfrogged and slip them closer to the cusp.

City have been in poor form as of late. With no league win since New Year’s Day, and only eight Premiership victories all season, they should certainly be feeling more than a little blue.

Wigan too have had a struggling season and are currently hovering with a six-point cushion over the bottom three. But a win for The Latics could see them reduce the heat of the relegation furnace to a simmer and land their weekend opponents in hotter water.

Previous ties between the pair as of late have largely favoured Wigan with the visitors enjoying the success in the last three. The two met back in October where Wigan produced a vigorous performance, quashing The Blues 4-0.

The two have a brief history. Despite stretching over 30 years, they have only faced each other five times in league fixtures with Wigan marginally enjoying the more success, 3:2. And the pair have never had a league draw.

City come into the game, high on FA Cup success after defeating the Championship’s Preston North End and progressing into 6th round draw. But their FA Cup acceleration has been their only real highlight in the 2006/07 season.

Without a win since New Year’s Day and with only eight wins throughout the entire season, City lie seven points above the drop zone. But they are far from easy opposition when on their own ground, losing only four games at home. Even the quality of Arsenal failed to earn anything from their trip to The Stadium.

Wigan too have only managed to emerge victorious eight times in the league but unlike their weekend rivals, they have managed to find some fleeting form as of late. Triumphs over Newcastle and Portsmouth and a draw with rock bottom Watford has helped The Latics distance themselves from destination Championship.

But a back-to-back league victory for Wigan would be perfect timing. A stunning free-kick from Ryan Taylor was enough to earn the home side three invaluable points. But a second consecutive win would really put daylight between them and the deadly eighteenth spot.

As the crucial period of the Premiership season closes in, it’s all about whose nerve holds out, whose tactics live up to scratch and whose desire for top flight football comes across in their play. Place your bets!
